Please remember to pack motor carefully and mark Fragile. Understanding how the motor works will help you pinpoint a vacuum wiper or a booster problem. The Vacuum wiper motor’s rubber hose is connected to the vacuum booster section of the fuel pump. The fuel pump is then connected to a metal tube which comes from the intake manifold where the vacuum is derived. The function of the booster is to provide vacuum while the car is accelerating. If the booster is defective your wipers would stop dead while you are accelerating and resume while you’re just cruising. First check your rubber hoses because 30 - 40 year old hoses tend to crack and break easily. Do not replace with a standard vacuum hose as they tend to collapse. Use reinforced hoses, a fuel line hose works well. To test the motor start your car and set speed to curb idle, next wet your windshield (never use wipers on a dry windshield as any dirt will scratch windshield) and turn on wipers. Rev the engine, if the motor stops and then resumes once back at idle speed that might indicate a defective motor or booster pump. If it slows down a little it is probably good. If the motor stalls completely it is a defective motor and you must now try to locate a replacement or have it rebuilt. With the enginge off try and move the wiper arms. Moving easily without any resistance indicates a defective motor. A good motor will not move or will just move ever so slowly with alot of resistance. Most 63 Models and 64 Americans to 71 AMC models use the same motor except for the backing plate. So don’t pass up one at a show if the backing plate is different from yours and that’s all a vender has. Just drill out the rivet and replace with your existing plate using machine screws and nuts. |
